Mathematics Curriculum
Approved by the BOE - August 2008
PROGRAM VISION AND MISSION
The Northfield Mathematics curriculum is shaped by a vision that fosters the development of mathematically literate students who can extend and apply their learning and who are effective participants in an increasingly technological society of the 21st century. We are committed to the vision of the New Jersey Core Curriculum Content Standards in Mathematics (revised 2008) “to enable ALL of New Jersey’s children to acquire the mathematical skills, understandings, and attitudes that they will need to be successful in their careers and daily lives.”1
The Northfield Mathematics curriculum mission is aligned with the New Jersey Clarification Project’s Mathematics Areas of Focus mission: “through mathematics, students communicate, make connections, reason, and represent the world quantitatively in order to pose and solve problems.”2
Through the utilization of the 2008 Northfield Mathematics Curriculum, teachers will challenge their students to think more deeply about the mathematics content, thus improving
student understanding of mathematics. This document is based on premises that all children can learn mathematics and that high expectations produce high achievement.
